Best Time for the Trang An Boat Tour

The driest months at Trang An are December to February, with under 30 mm of rain a month on the long-term record for Ninh Binh, and November and March to April are mild. August and September are the wettest, 315 and 362 mm, and those are the weeks high water closed the boats in 2026. Avoid the eve and first day of Tet, when Trang An closes.

The flood weeks

The rain matters more on the water than on land: the boats pass through caves at water level, and when the water rises in the caves the routes close. In 2026 route 3 closed on 31 July and reopened on 2 August; one alternative route replaced the three from 21 August and the whole site stopped from 23 August during storm Narra; the area reopened on 25 August; two adjusted routes ran on 15 and 16 September, and on 17 September the boats stopped. Reports dated 20 September have them reopened from 13:00 on one temporary route, until further notice; we found no notice restoring routes 1, 2 and 3 up to 1 November 2026. Tet

For Tet 2026 Ninh Binh’s tourism department listed Trang An as closed on 16 and 17 February, the last day of the lunar year and the first day of Tet, while Tam Coc closed for part of each day and Hoa Lu, Bai Dinh and Mua Cave stayed open. The dates move every year with the lunar calendar, and some tours add a Tet surcharge. Check the next year’s list before you book a day around Tet.

The hour of the day

The day tours from Hanoi reach the wharf at about 13:30, after Hoa Lu and lunch, and are on the water through the early afternoon. Staying in Ninh Binh lets you take the boat in the morning: the private day by Asian Discovery Travel starts at the wharf at about 10:00 (see the private day). Weekends and public holidays are busy in Ninh Binh, so a weekday is quieter.
