Trang An or Tam Coc?

Trang An and Tam Coc are Ninh Binh’s two rowing-boat rides, 9.8 km apart by road. Trang An is a network of three main routes from one wharf through caves, flooded valleys and temples in the World Heritage core, about three hours a route, 300,000 dong. Tam Coc is one river, the Ngo Dong, through three caves between rice fields, 250,000 dong. Pick Trang An for caves and temples; pick Tam Coc for the rice valley.

Trang An

Trang An’s wharf sends boats onto three main routes inside the Trang An Landscape Complex, the mixed cultural and natural World Heritage property of 6,226 hectares that UNESCO inscribed in 2014. Route 1 counts nine caves, route 2 four, route 3 three, among them Hang Dot, more than 1,000 m long. Each main route has three temple stops. The routes has every stop.

Tam Coc

Tam Coc is a single ride on the Ngo Dong river from the Tam Coc wharf to three caves, Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba, and back, between rice fields under the limestone. The Bich Dong pagoda is a separate stop by electric car, sold with the boat ticket for 350,000 dong. In September 2026 it was the boat that kept going: from 17 September it ran to the mouth of Hang Hai and back, without Hang Ba, while Trang An stopped for three days, then reopened on one temporary route (reports dated 20 September).

Which one

Take Trang An if you want caves, temples and the World Heritage core, or a longer time on the water; every day tour on this site includes it. Take Tam Coc if you want the rice valley, if you sleep near its wharf, or if Trang An is closed for high water, as it was from 17 to 20 September 2026, or running only a temporary route, as it did from 20 September.
